What we Think
It is a very versatile car. We mean this in every regard. It was designed to sell around the world and thus has a very generic feel to it. No distinctive style elements that would place it out of any world markets. We love the engine quality. It is top notch. The CVT helps with gas mileage and is incredibly responsive, while the cabin remains very quiet. Handling is an A+ and the option for all or front wheel drive is nice. Side curtain airbags go to show that Dodge isn't skimping on safety even at the base models. We think a price point of $13,000 for the 1.8L is pitch perfect and should really open this car to twentysomethings. The interior design facilities storage and maximal occupant space. This thing is actually pretty roomy. The interior styling is plain but not cheap and we think it goes with the car well. If you read any of Doge's press releases about this car you will see them touting how this car was made for "up and comers" and "world travelers" and people with "active lifestyles". Everything indeed about this car caters to this consumer type and that is why we think it will sell well despite less than stellar looks. From the introductory press release, this car targets 20-somethings with make $45,000. 35% of owners will be college grads (most likely fresh grads @ $45k). The car also aims to capture the 40 year old parents looking for a safe, reliable, yet fun car for their kids.
Dodge sees the compact market expanding over the next few years, and with gas prices trending the way they are, how can you not agree? This was a smart move on their part and their timing is beautiful.
There are a couple of new little features that are worth noting. The glove compartment opens up into a drink chiller that will hold 5 sodas/beers. The rear hatch has flip down speakers for tailgating with friends at a big game, and finally the roof of the cargo hold has a flashlight for those late night roadside bathroom runs. One more thing the 20-something is interested in: music. The Caliber has a neat little iPod holder in the front center console that is very nifty. Its position doesn't hinder driving either. Very nice touch.
As for interior cargo space, the Caliber is likely to dominate the class. The 60/40 fold down seating is very versatile for handling large and strange dimension objects.
Gas mileage is good, but we just wish DC wasn't so stubborn with hybrid technology. If you could slap a low-end hybrid engine in this thing it would sell like wildfire.
A couple of things we didn't like. To get a not stripped version (i.e. well equipped) you need to fork out an extra $2,000. All Wheel Drive is only available on the R/T model and you can only get a manual on the SE. The car is lacking front-seat side airbags which is a huge safety feature needed for protection against side collisions. To be honest we aren't a huge fan of this car's stance. It is very constrained and one of those "in betweeners". It isn't quite a full on CUV and isn't quite a standard compact. The spoiler is 'aborted' and makes the car feel very pontiac vibe-ish. If you can get over the looks, this will serve to be quite a little ride for the price tag. Be sure to check out the Dodge Caliber at your local dealer.
