Mazda CX7

This model is a brand new CUV (crossover utility vehicle) that will debut in Spring of 2006. It combines the handling and fuel efficiency of a car with the utility of a traditional sports utility vehicle. The car is built on the same platform used in the Mazda 6 which of course has garnered many positive reviews since its release.

Mazda says that this car was truly designed to have the "soul of a sportscar". Most reviews at this point agree. The raked back design is very energetic and complements the equally bold front end well. The car's resemblance to the RX-8 is significant. The 60/40 split seating in the back row can easily handle 3 full sized adults or be flipped down to make room for 30 cubic feet of cargo (which is average for this class). One positive about this engine is that its design affords it amazing power. 258lb-ft torque are available at 2,500 rpm with maximum torque available to 5,000rpm. This thing drives like it has a MUCH bigger engine.
The handling is smooth (what you would expect from the Mazda 6) and afforded by the fully independent suspension. The car comes with ABS, Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control standard. The car also features an active Torque Split system which utilizes an onboard computer to send torque to slipping tires in order to maintain a tight grip on the road. Side curtain and side-impact airbags are
The car comes with the normal bells and whistles like remote keyless entry, CD stereo, and the touring models will have leather heated seats and automatic climate control. A navigation system and sunroof is also optional at higher level packages.
The interior is well appointed. We like the two layers of the dash and the instruments and paneling are tight. The interior design affords amazing functional space. It literally feels like you could fit just about anything in here. The interior design also allows amazing panoramic views for those lucky enough to be in the front seats.
Mazda has huge plans for CX7 hoping it will lead to an increased market share in North America.
What we Think
Although Mazda isn't the first automaker to reach this new market, we think they are poised to do it well. People are starting to adopt the Mazda brand as a reliable, affordable and attractive automaker. With hot Mazda 3 sales we think the CX7 is bound to follow the same course. Especially given the huge and rising demand for CUV's. Mazda will be facing off against the Ford Edge, Pontiac Torrent, and others. However, these models will not be out until Fall so Mazda may be able to get a foothold on the market by then.
The bottom line is that if you are looking for a reliable, fun to drive SUV that doesn't kill you at the pump then you may have found your ride. Be sure to test drive this car.
