This car is actually already selling in Japan under the name Tiida and is doing quite well in that market. The US versions of the Versa will include 3 transmission options. 4-speed auto, 6-speed manual, or CVT. The CVT trans is heralded as the future and boasts 10% increase in fuel efficiency.
A very important note with this car is that Nissan is trying to place it as a higher quality option in the sub-compact market. They realize that competition is going to be tight (with the Honda Fit et al) and they know that not much cash is made at the base sub-compact models. So there are plenty of options available which will kick the $12,000 base price up a bit. Some features include Bluetooth technology for hands-free talking, smart key remote entry, and a kicking Rockford Fosgate stereo (the same on in all the Mazda 3's).
The competition in this market includes the aforementioned Honda Fit as well as the Toyota Yaris, and Chevy' Aveo. All of these sub-compacts offer a solid ride for the money which will make it difficult for one maker to achieve a dominant position. That being said, the Versa has the largest amount of total interior space out of all competing models in the class and also boast the best fuel efficiency. This could create an edge for Nissan.
This car is primarily targeted to young, hip twentysomethings looking to save money on gas without giving up too much utility.
What we Think
One feature I must mention is that the back seats have a slight recline to them. This is freaking awesome for a tall guy like myself in a sub-compact. Furthermore I loved the interior design space. The car looks small, but once inside you feel like it is much bigger. Plenty of cargo space and decent styling abound. The one thing I didn't like was the exterior styling. It is a bit plain for my tastes, but it also isn't bad looking.
Sitting in this thing at the NY Auto Show one can't help but notice the quality. This thing didn't feel cheap at all. Yet when I was in the Yaris, I found myself saying "this is crap compared to the Versa". The finish and interior styling was simple and clean.
I think the Honda Fit is the best looking model out of the sub-compact lot, but the Versa is definitely the best deal for the money. You get a lot of car for $12,000. The Fit is nice, but it was also a bit more expensive. If you are young, short on cash and want something that can carry stuff, then the 2007 Nissan Versa is one you will have to drive.
